Educator
When Miranda decided to become a teacher, she knew she was unlikely to find herself in a “regular” classroom and more likely to find herself pushing the boundaries of the colonial education system from within. After all you gotta know the rules to break ‘em!
As a young person, she honed her teaching and leadership skills as an active member of the Girl Guides of Canada movement. Following a popular trajectory of future outdoor educators, Miranda worked as a camp counsellor for many summers while earning degrees in outdoor recreation and geography. Her love of being on the land coupled with her discovery of expeditionary learning led Miranda to work for companies such as Outward Bound and the National Outdoor Leadership School as well as guiding for various private companies in the Canadian north.
Miranda obtained her Bachelor of Education degree from Queen’s University, specializing in outdoor and experiential education. It was also in her early twenties that Miranda began the conscious efforts to reclaim more of her indigenous cultural practices. Beginning that reclamation journey helped her to understand her deep and intuitive connection to nature, which she knew was essential for her next steps.
Combining her love of the land, music, community and education, Currie has provided elevated learning experiences for students as a land based indigenous cultural liaison in both YK1 and Yellowknife Catholic Schools over the past 10 years. Through education, Miranda moves towards changing the indigenous narrative in Canada – one student at a time. Please check out her Philosophy of Education and workshop offerings.
