Musician

At her grade 8 graduation concert, Miranda, wearing one inch heels for the first time, fell down the stage steps, landing on top of her fiddle, smashing it pieces. In grade 9 &10, she rode the school bus 1.5 hours each way to attend a public high school that offered a strings program taught by her favourite teacher Ms. G. In grade 3, at a school presentation designed to recruit young musicians for weekly group lessons, she heard the violin for the first time, and fell in love.

Currie’s musical journey began early and required persistence. Miranda convinced her parents to pay the $50 for the year to take group lessons at school. With some encouragement from her Grandmother, they agreed! Miranda played on a full size violin found in her grandmother’s attic from the time she was eight years old.

In high-school she picked up the guitar, and various other instruments, sang in choirs, played in an orchestra and started her first band. As she travelled throughout her 20’s, she noticed that even though she might not be able to communicate with people in their language, she could sit down and jam with people from all over the world. She played in Uni orchestras in Switzerland and busked on the streets in Pusan, South Korea.

Some success came in 2015, when the Canadian Folk Music Awards nominated Currie for Aboriginal Singer-Songwriter of the year for her debut album Up In the Air. Miranda continued to perform and sing in public and as culture and language teacher in schools. She saw how kids responded to music and how it helped them learn their indigenous languages. Miranda made the decision to create kid’s music with a northern indigenous flair, releasing Bouncing in the Boreal in 2018 and Tickling the Taiga in 2022.
